After a blockbuster opening last Thursday for the most recent Yash Raj Film’s (YRF) Thugs of Hindosthan, the movie has since witnessed a downward spiral of earnings per day, reports Livemint.
The action film starring Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan has failed to live up its expectations despite a Rs 50 crore record-breaking opening. The collections are slipping down with Rs 28 crore, Rs 22 crore and Rs 17 crore totalling up to Rs 67 crore over the weekend. The movie, teased as YRF’s biggest project till date, saw a massive dip of about Rs 11 crore in sales on Sunday from Friday, the trade website pointed out.
Despite making a net box office collection of Rs 117.50 crore from over 5,000 screens in India, almost 50 per cent of its earnings have come from the first day. The Vijay Krishna Acharya directed-film joins the growing list of Diwali disappointments in recent years, despite its sales of satellite and digital rights of nearly Rs 140 crore.
Movies releasing on festive weekends are failing to live up to expectations in recent years. The Aamir Khan-Amitabh Bachchan film follows the trend of films opening well and failing to continue. Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Race 3 (Eid 2018) and Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish 3 (2013) had opening weekend collections of Rs 97 crore, Rs 100.97 crore and Rs 49 crore respectively. However, they ended up with lifetime collections of Rs 194 crore, Rs 166 crore and Rs 175 crore respectively.
According to the estimation by Box Office India, Thugs of Hindostan may not even match the total collections of Race 3. A reduction in the dropping pace of earnings and festive period in the country over will not help their case either.
