‘No One Can Take Away Your Rights’: PM Modi Assures People Of Assam Amid Protests In State Over CAB

Amid protests in Assam against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the people of the state that they had nothing to worry about the bill and that rights of the indigenous people of the North-Eastern state will be protected.

“I want to assure my brothers and sisters of Assam that they have nothing to worry after the passing of CAB,” PM Modi said in a tweet on Thursday (12 December).

“I want to assure them- no one can take away your rights, unique identity and beautiful culture. It will continue to flourish and grow,” he added.

The PM further assured that the political, linguistic rights of the Assamese people will be protected as per the clause 6 of the Assam accord.

“The Central Government and I are totally committed to constitutionally safeguard the political, linguistic, cultural and land rights of the Assamese people as per the spirit of Clause 6,” he said.

The state has been witnessing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, that seeks to grant citizenship to persecuted minorities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, for past few days . The bill was passed in Lok Sabha on Monday (9 December) night and in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday (11 December).

Guwahati, the epicentre of anti-CAB protests, was placed under indefinite curfew last night while the Army was called in at four places. The Army conducted a flag march in the city on Thursday (9 December) morning. Vehicles were stranded in various cities of Assam due to heavy blockade, reports Times of India.
