No Support For Hotel Mumbai In India? ‘Sensitive Content’, Legal Tussles Stand In The Way Of Dev Patel’s Film’s Release

Despite its worldwide release on 29 March, ‘Hotel Mumbai’, the Dev Patel, Anupam Kher-starrer movie based on heinous terrorist attack in Mumbai in 2008 is yet to hit the Indian theatres, Firstpost has reported.

According to the report, the Times of India investigated into the factors that could have led to the film not being released in the subcontinent. The daily reportedly could not get any comments from film’s marketing team and producers on the unannounced delay. However, Becker Street, the American distributors of the movie told TOI that they do not have the international rights of the film.

Local distributors, including Delhi-based distributor Shaaminder Mallik told the daily that the ‘Hotel Mumbai’ could not find any distributors in India because of the “sensitive nature” of the film.

On the other hand, Netflix has also dropped the film on account of a legal battle with Plus Holdings, a Dubai-based company, TOI has reported.

As per the report, Plus Holdings moved the Bombay High Court filing a petition to seek injunction against Netflix from screening the movie. They reportedly claimed having rights to release the movie in the SAARC countries and will continue to seek to block screening of the film in India through other platforms as well.
