Floods in Kerala has caused heavy losses to the dairy industry in Kerala and affected productivity in the post-flood period due to lack of fodder, The Hindu Business line has reported.

Close to 10,000 cattle died during floods as per the state animal husbandry department. In addition to this 12,000 goats and lakhs of poultry have also perished. The state, however, succeeded in rescuing 50,000 cattle. Losses to the dairy sector are estimated to be Rs 400 crore.

The next 10-12 days will be crucial for the dairy industry in the state as lack of fodder for already starved cattle could lead to death by starvation. There has been a scarcity of fodder after the floods have receded. The negligence of the state government in providing fodder could have a multiplier impact on the local economy.

“We have already given 10 tonnes of mineral mixture and cattle feed over a week. Since rail and road connectivity has improved, the state should make arrangements to stock adequate fodder,” said Deputy Campaign Director, Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisation V Prasanth while agreeing to reports of fodder scarcity. Each flood affected district required 100 tonnes of fodder.

Before the flood hit Kerala, the state was on the verge of self-sufficiency in milk production. However, the present crisis has been a huge setback for the sector.
