Union Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar met with his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif on Sunday (22 December) and decided to accelerate the work on strategic Chabahar port project, reports Business Standard.
Presently on a two-day visit to Iran aimed at strengthening the bilateral ties, Jaishankar co-chaired the 19th Joint Commission Meeting. He is also expected to call on President of the middle eastern nation, Hassan Rouhani.
It should be noted that the Chabahar port project involving India, Iran and land-locked nation of Afghanistan is located in Sistan and Baluchestan province of Iran, and is considered a major gateway to the entire Central Asian region.
Further, despite all anti-Iran sanctions, the United States (US) has exempted India from sanctions on the work related to Chabahar port project given that it has been recognised by officials at Washington to be a lifeline for the Afghan nation where its own troops are also deployed to counter the rise of the Taliban.
