Pakistan has rejected the visa requests of a United Nations (UN) team to interview 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed residing in Pakistan. A fresh proposal was moved by Saeed to remove his name from the UNSC 1267 sanctions list - a list of UN-recognised terrorists.

As per norms, before removing the name from the list, the UN conducts personal interviews of the individuals who are being considered for de-listing. However, they were unable to do so in Saeed’s case due to the visa refusal by Pakistan.

According to reports by Defence News, Pakistan was fearful that Saeed would voluntarily reveal more evidence against the Islamic country and their support to various terror organisations, which are based on its soil. Hence, they blocked a face-to-face interview of Hafiz Saeed by the UN officials.

India’s stern stance post-Pulwama terror attack has resulted in support from all but one permanent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) member - China - over sanctioning Pakistan-based terror heavyweights Maulana Masood Azhar and Syed Salahudeen.
