In a major boost for India's defence exports, Philippines and India are set to sign a deal for the purchase of elite BrahMos missile defence systems from India in early 2020, reports Hindustan Times.
The development would make the Philippines the first nation to buy the missiles which have been jointly developed and designed by India and Russia. Presently, Philippines and India are undergoing price negotiations for the deal's conclusion.
Once bought, the BrahMos missiles would equip the first ever land-based Missile System Battery of the Philippines Army which was activated and launched in October this year. The Philippines Army expects the Battery's personnel, as well as its equipment to be acquired by 2024.
It should be noted that the BrahMos missiles have evinced major interest amongst the ASEAN block of nations, with nations like Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia also exploring the purchase of the advanced missiles.
