The Supreme Court today (23 January) dismissed a petition seeking postponement of the Union Budget. The Narendra Modi government has decided to present the Union Budget for the financial year 2017-18 on 1 February.

The opposition has said that budget presentation ahead of the upcoming assembly polls in five states can influence the results.

Advocate M L Sharma, who filed the PIL, argued that the Centre should present the budget in the financial year 2017-18, commencing 1 April. The court said that the budget does not violate the Model Code of Conduct in poll-bound states.
