The Chardham Highway Development Programme (Chardham Mahamarg Vikas Pariyojna) will involve the creation of 900km of roads, linking the four Himalayan shrines situated in Uttarakhand, namely Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The total investment to be made in this project is Rs 12,000 crore, of which 17 projects amounting to Rs 3,000 crore have already been sanctioned and tendered.
The need for this project arose after travel to the four pilgrimage centres became difficult after floods devastated Uttarakhand last year. Other occurrences like landslides are also an ever-present danger in this region. This project will help ease travel and improve connectivity in the Himalayan areas connecting these centres.
