Police in Begusarai, Bihar, have registered a case of violation of Model Code of Conduct against former student leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), Kanhaiya Kumar, the CPI candidate from Begusarai, reports The New Indian Express.
SHO Arvind Kumar stated that the case has been registered at Mansur Chak police station under provisions of the Representation of People Act.
The official proceedings against Kumar were initiated following a complaint by Mansur Chak Block Development Officer-cum-flying squad magistrate Shatrughan Rajak that Kumar had addressed people at a public gathering without seeking prior permission from the concerned authorities.
The former JNU student leader faces Union Minister Giriraj Singh from the BJP and Tanveer Hasan from the RJD as the primary competitors in the constituency. The latter had received the second highest number of votes in the seat during the previous general elections.
Voting in Begusarai will be conducted in the fourth phase of the polls on 29 April.
