US president Donald Trump will speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 11:30 PM (India standard time) today, according to the White House. PM Modi was one of the first world leaders to congratulate Trump on his historic victory in November.

The White House didn’t reveal what the two leaders will talk about but it is likely to be an ice-breaking chat session. Both leaders may extend invitation to each other to visit their countries.

Trump’s earlier calls with world leaders had created a lot of controversy when he put decades old US official policy of ‘One China’ in doubt by dialing Taiwan president. In a chat with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Trump expressed his desire to visit his country which President Obama avoided during his eight years in office.

President Pranab Mukherjee has already sent an official invitation to President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump. The new administration hasn’t responded yet.

Given his criticisms of China’s trade practices and inclusion of prominent China hawks in the cabinet, President Trump is expected to continue with Obama administration’s policy of ‘pivot to Asia’.
