A private company has bagged the order to make 10 lakh grenades for the Indian defence forces for the first time, the Economic Times has reported.
According to the daily’s report, the new grenade will replace the ones currently in use with the forces and based on a World War II era design.
Economic Explosive Limited (EEL), the Nagpur-based firm which has received the order, will make these grenades over a period of two years. The deal, signed earlier today, is valued at Rs 400 crore, the report says.
The new grenade, which will be manufactured by EEL, has been designed and developed by the Chandigarh-based Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The grenade has been extensively tested by the Army in high-altitude areas, deserts and plains. The technology for this grenade was transferred to the private sector player by the DRDO in the year 2016.
