While addressing a rally in Kerala’s Areekode Congress general secretary Priyanka Vadra claimed that her Grandmother Indira Gandhi used to watch football and had supported Italy in the 1982 World Cup final, ANI has reported.

Vadra also claimed that she and Congress president Rahul Gandhi are football fans as well. She claimed that their whole family was watching the 1982 world cup final when she asked her grandmother which team was she supporting,

Indira Gandhi then purportedly claimed that as India was not playing she would support Italy in the match. Incidentally Italy won the game by defeating West Germany 3-1.

In a video of Vadra’s speech which has emerged on social media, she can be repeatedly heard referring to football as “soccer” a phrase which usually riles up hardcore football fans.

She also claimed that her son and Rahul Gandhi are also football fans and ‘jokes’ that she thus knows about the problem women have to face when football matches are going on.

This speech can be seen as a means to canvas votes as Kerala is well known for having a large number of football fans.
