Punjab Extends Lockdown Till 31 May; CM Amarinder Singh Promises Some Relaxations

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday (16 May) announced the extension of the lockdown in state till 31 May in order to contain the widening spread of COVID-19, reports Economic Times.

However, in some relief for the state’s residents, CM Singh said that even though the lockdown will continue to be in force till 31 May, the curfew restrictions will be lifted on 18 May. Also, limited public transport services will resume.

Seeking people's support and cooperation in this course till 31 May, CM Singh assured the people that his government would give more relaxations in the lockdown from 18 May onwards. He added that he would allow the opening of maximum shops and small businesses.

However, CM Singh made it clear that the educational institutions in the State will continue to remain closed.

It should be noted that the total count of confirmed cases in the State has reached 1,935. Out of these, 305 cases have completely recovered from COVID-19. Meanwhile, 32 individuals have also succumbed to death because of the disease so far.
