An MLA from the Indian National Congress (INC) representing Jalandhar West constituency, Sushil Rinku, has threatened a woman officer in broad daylight in public over a demolition drive in Basti Danishmandan. The incident happened on Friday (12 October) and the officer involved is Joint Commissioner Aashika Jain.

He has been quoted by The Tribune as saying, “Aap to lady ho, koi gents hota toh phir mein batata ke kaise behave karta hoon (Had you been a man, I would have shown you how I behave),” he said, challenging her to dare step into his constituency again.

Jain is a new recruit into the civil service. The IAS officer argued back telling the MLA that she was only implementing the law, to which he replied,“Your law will not work here. It is the people’s law which will be executed here. The people are ready to pay fee whenever the regularisation policy is implemented. Things will not work like this. It is my first meeting with you and I have said all that I wanted to.”

The officer has now submitted a complaint to Commissioner Diprava Lakra. The incident has been condemned by senior lawmakers, bureaucrats and officers.
