Radical Islamist Sharjeel Imam who is currently lodged in a Guwahati Jail over an inflammatory anti-CAA speech has tested positive for Covid-19, India Today has reported.
A Delhi Police team had recently gone to Assam to take his custody and bring him back to Delhi but the process has now been postponed due to the Covid-19 infection.
Imam a PhD student at JNU has been accused of wanting to see India turn into an Islamic state and had called for severing Assam from India.
In the Delhi Police chargesheet, Imam has been charged with leading violent protest. He has been booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
After his radical speech went viral on social media, an arrest warrant was issued against him for sedition. Imam then began evading arrest and the police began carrying out raids to nab him. He was ultimately nabbed from Bihar.
