Indian Railways Moves To Cut The Flab: Seeks List Of Under-Performing Employees Above 55 Years By 9 August

The Indian Railways has directed Zonal railway officers to make a list of employees who will complete serving 30 years or turn 55 by April 2020, reports First Post. Ministry sources said that employees who will be found in the ineligible to continue in service will be offered premature retirement.

“Zonal Railways are, therefore, requested to furnish the service records of staff in an enclosed proforma, who will be attaining age of 55 years or will be completing 30 years of service qualifying for pension, whichever occurs earlier, in the first quarter of 2020 that is from January to March 2020,” a letter from Railway Board to zonal offices said.

The letter, with a date stamp of 27 July, states that the board has set 9 August as the last date to submit the details. Currently, railways employee are 13 lakh staffers, the source tells while adding that the ministry is aiming to reduce to 10 lakh by 2020.

A source said that the move is part of a periodic review which the railways is undertaking. Employees with unsatisfactory performance, disciplinary issues will be offered premature retirement. “This government is very serious about this,” he said.

The zonal officers have to access records of employees mental and physical fitness, attendance and punctuality. Further, there is a section which finds whether employees are cost-conscious, how they deal with correspondence and his/her discipline needs to be rated.
