Rajasthan: Two Die In Violent Tribal Agitation Demanding Unclaimed General Teacher Seats For ST Candidates

Protests and agitation over teacher’s examinations turned to National Highway 8 near Dungarpur have taken a violent turn. Two people are reported dead and two injured.

The candidates who are protesting over the teachers’ recruitment examination reportedly pelted stones and torched vehicles.

They are demanding the filling of vacancies in the unreserved section “with the Scheduled Tribe-category candidates”, as per reports. The hotspot of violence is nearly 500 km from Jaipur, the state capital.

To calm the violence and to take control over the situation, police used baton charge and fired tear gas in order to disperse the mob, as the mob laid “siege” on the highway. Three persons were arrested and an assistant superintendent of police.

This report says: “The candidates of the 2018 teachers' recruitment exam have been protesting for over the past fortnight to press for their demand to fill 1,167 general posts with ST-category candidates, police said...".

The members of the tribal community have been protesting for two weeks. They are demanding the filing of the vacant posts which are reserved for the general category applicants.

The seats have been lying unclaimed owing to the "lack of qualifying candidates. The members of the tribal community are demanding that those seats should come to them.

Internet was suspended and section 144 was imposed in four districts of southern Rajasthan over the protests in the wake of the violent protests in Dungarpur. The districts are Udaipur, Banswara and Pratapgarh.
