Newly elected deputy mayor of Bengaluru, Ramila Umashankar, died in the early hours of Friday (October 5) due to a heart attack.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said he was "deeply saddened to hear of her demise,” reported TOI.

"She had actively participated with us at the Namma Metro flagging off event just yesterday," the CM said.

"She was a dedicated social worker and committed party worker. It's shocking to learn that she is no more with us. My heartfelt condolences to her family. May her soul rest in peace. Pray the Almighty gives courage and strength to the family to bear this loss," the CM said in a press statement.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, meanwhile, declared a holiday at all BBMP offices spread across all eight zones, except essential services like hospitals and markets, for Friday. The civic body issued a circular in this regard.

The cause of death is yet to be ascertained despite the fact that her family members said she died due to a heart attack. Authorities at The Chord Road Hospital near Basaveshwar Nagar where she was admitted at 12:50 am on Friday said that she was brought dead.

"We can't say that she died due to cardiac attack. She was brought dead. No death certificate has been issued as yet. Police have been informed about the case," said Dr Vishwas Rao, director, Chord Road hospital.
