Reforming India’s Power Sector: Centre Forms High-Level Committee To Recommend Major Reforms

A high-level group has been formed by the Centre to make recommendations for changing the structure and system of power sale and purchase in the country, reports Hindustan Times.

According to the report, the move is part of the Modi government’s key agenda of bringing major reforms in power sector including uninterrupted 24x7 power supply to consumers.

The group led by special power secretary Sanjiv Nandan Sahai will recommend reforms required in the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and for increasing competitiveness in the power markets.

It will also include representatives from Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), Central Electricity Authority of India (CEAI), Power System Operation Corporation and the Power Ministry.

The group will also study the present system of the power sale and purchase, which is predominantly governed by the PPAs, power trading and other way of transactions in purchase and sale of power. It will also examine whether the PPAs need to be completely restructured.

A report will be prepared by the group to make the recommendations within six months.
