The senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Monday (16 September) said that reservation is necessary for upliftment of socially and economically backward members of the society but quota system alone could not ensure their complete development, reports Economic Times.

Addressing a gathering of the 'Akhil Bhartiya Mali Samaj Mahaadhiveshan', Gadkari underscored the importance of education along with social and economic measures to ensure the progress of any community.

"Reservation should be given, but to those who are oppressed (shoshit-pidit), Dalits, socially and economically backward sections of the society,” Gadkari said.

Gadkari further added, "It is not true if one thinks that by reservation alone a community will get complete progress. The communities which got maximum reservation have progressed - this thinking is also not true."

At the event, Gadkari also emphasised on the need for visionary leaders to come out and lead their communities. He said, "There are people who went on to become big leaders, but no one ever talks about their caste. Hence, we should create such leaders who can successfully lead the country, states and change the economic condition of the society."
