During a public address on Patriots’ Day celebrated yesterday ( 13 August), Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh called for the identification of those individuals who were aiding the illegal movement of Rohingya migrants into the state, reports PTI.

He made the remarks following the recent arrest of six Rohingyas at the Tulihal International Airport at the state capital, Imphal. The said persons had arrived at the airport with forged documents after taking a flight from New Delhi.

“It indicates that many of them are taking shelter in the state and we have to find out the persons who are behind the illegal entry of Rohingya from different places,” the chief minister remarked.

He specifically appealed to local Manipuris to help track down illegal Rohingyas and their agents.

Rohingyas are a primarily Muslim ethnic group belonging to Myanmar’s Rakhine state; several hundred thousand of them have fled the country since 2016-17 following alleged massacres against them, with a large number them also making way their way into Indian territory.

Many view the community as a possible security threat since radical Islamist groups are known to have been extensively involved with the population to spread their fundamentalist ideals.
