The Steel Authority of India (SAIL) is going to dissolve the Raw Materials Division (RMD) and relocate its headquarter from Kolkata to Rourkela and Bokaro as per a report in The New Indian Express.

The Steel Executives' Federation of India (SEFI), general secretary and Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) executives' association president Bimal Bisi said that SAIL decided to dissolve RMD in its board meeting on Friday (11 June) as the RMD headquarters at Kolkata are very far from its captives mines and its operations very costly.

"The decision would see relocation of around 2,500 RMD employees including 500 executives in addition to 20,000 contract workers," Bisi said.

SAIL's expenditures were about Rs 50 crore annually in maintaining the Kolkata headquarters of RMD. Under the new arrangements, the RSP and BSP would run their mines with a fraction of the cost, Bisi further added.

SAIL mines in Odisha would come under the RSP, and those Jharkhand would come under the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSP). The employees at RMD headquarters, Kolkata, would be moved to Rourkela and Bokaro.
