A fire exchange between Naxals and the Dantewada District Reserve Guard took place in a forest area between Gaadam and Jungampal villages in Dantewada took place on Sunday (11 April).
A Naxal carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head was killed in the fire. A 8 mm pistol, a country-made gun, 2 kg of IED and other items have been recovered from his possession, P Sundarraj, IG Bastar has been quoted saying in reports.
The name of the Naxal is reportedly Vetti Hunga. He a "militia commander" in the Maoist movement.
After the exchange of fire, his body was recovered from the spot. The encounter site revealed one "8 mm pistol, a country-made muzzle loading gun, a 2-kg Improvised Explosive Device (IED), Maoist bags, literature and medicines".
The Naxals continue to target construction sites and water treatment plants, as they did in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district. A water treatment plant being built on the bank of Mingachal river to supply potable water to Bijapur town was targeted.
An officer has been quoted saying that a dozen armed ultras reached the construction site located around 450 kilometres from Raipur. They "threatened the vehicle and machine operators to halt construction activities. They then set ablaze two concrete mixing machines, two earth movers and a tractor before fleeing from the spot."
