In a shocking statement, senior Congress leader from Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), Ghulam Nabi Azad, has said that some officials of the J&K Police were ‘murderers’ of ‘innocent’ people, reports ANI.
Azad made the statement as part of a campaign speech in Kupwara, stating that the J&K Police was no less of an enemy, and was responsible for many atrocities. Even as he praised the work of some policemen who were martyred, he criticised others from the force who he claimed had killed innocent people in order to receive promotions. The statement can be interpreted as a reference to alleged fake encounters.
GN Azad,Congress in Kupwara: Vo(J&K Police) bhi kam dushman nahi hai. Unhone bhi kam zyadtiyaan nahi ki. Main salute karta hun unn police walon ko jinhone apni jaanein di, lekin usmein bhi kuch naasoor aise the jo apni promotion aur paise ke liye nihathe logon ka kathal karte the https://t.co/9fs6dctQtK

He also took the opportunity to take aim at the Prime Minister, asserting that the situation in the state had improved up till 2014, but had again deteriorated severely, reminiscent of 1990-91, a time of heightened tensions in the Valley. He claimed that the person solely responsible for the ‘deterioration’ of the situation in Kashmir was the Indian Prime Minister.
Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress in Kupwara: Kya wajah hai ki 2014 tak haalaat thik hogaye the? Kya wajah hai ki 2014 se lekar aaj tak haalaat phir 1990-91 ki tarah hue? Uske liye agar koi ek aadmi zimmedaar hai, iss desh ka PM zimmedaar hai. #JammuAndKashmir pic.twitter.com/hCb22oIBHL

The Congress leader’s comments come at a time when his party’s proposal in its manifesto regarding the Kashmir issue has drawn widespread flak. The Congress manifesto promises to review and possibly amend the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in J&K.
