In a big win for the adoption of electric mobility in the public transport domain, Uttar Pradesh is set to soon witness 350 electric buses plying on the roads across major cities of the state like Lucknow, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Prayagraj and Jhansi, reports Economic Times.
Private sector company GreenCell Mobility Private Limited is investing about Rs 400 crore in a consortium led by "zero-emission" commercial vehicle manufacturer PMI Electro Mobility Solutions to deploy 350 electric buses across cities in two packages.
The development comes as PMI Electro Mobility Solutions had won the bid to deploy 350 electric buses along with charging infrastructure across the aforementioned six cities. As per the company's managing director Satish Jain, its partnership with GreenCell Mobility will lead to the generation of 1,000 direct jobs in the state.
Of the 350 buses, Lucknow and Kanpur will each get 100 buses followed by Varanasi and Prayagraj which will both get 50 buses each. Meanwhile, Jhansi and Gorakhpur will be getting 25 buses each.
These buses are likely to travel a minimum of 63,000 kilometres per annum and benefit the environment by ensuring zero tailpipe emissions of CO2 equivalent to about 22,000 tonnes each year.
GreenCell Mobility's managing director and chief executive Ashok Agarwal has said that the company is happy to be investing in the state to promote green and sustainable public transport.
