‘Something Wrong With Kerala Government’: NCW Chief Slams Shabby Investigation Into Church-Related Crimes

The National Commission For Women (NCW) has taken suo-moto notice of Kerala’s investigation into the death of a 55-year-old nun named Sister Susan near St Stephens' School, Firstpost has reported.

“Taking suo-moto cognisance, the commission wrote to Director General of Police Lokanath Behera, directing him to fairly investigate the incident and take appropriate action. He has also been directed to apprise the commission about the detailed action taken in the matter,” NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma said.

In an oblique reference to the recent spate of allegations against Church officials and priests, the NCW Chairperson said that ‘something was wrong with the state government’. She said, "Something is wrong with the state government. They are not doing anything. If they would have taken one step in the first case only, then such cases would not have increased."

A Kerala MLA went so far as to call the nun a ‘prostitute’ for having complained of the sexual accuse.

The NCW has expressed its displeasure with the tacky police investigation against Bishop Franco Mulakkal in the Jalandhar Diocese rape case.

Despite several nuns having stood up in protest against Mulakkal the police have failed to arrest the offending bishop. The police said that the investigation was in final stages and they needed more evidence to arrest the Bishop.

Nuns demanding justice in the case have said that they have not received help from police, government or Church authorities. Bishop Franco Mulakkal has maintained that he has been ‘wrongly accused’ of rape by the complainant.
