Netflix is looking to strengthen its entertainment market in South and South East Asia with 17 originals at various stages of production to be released throughout the next year.

Focusing on India, the video-on-demand platform has lined up five web series and one feature film scheduled soon for release. This includes a prequel to the Baahubali movie series.

Netflix entered the Asian market in early 2016, with an audience base of 137 million in 27 different languages around the world and it admitted that the initial library of content was entirely based on licensed material- both Hollywood and local. But today, after they have successfully managed to secure their subscriber base in Asia, the company is banking and focussing on the releases of quality originals.

“Great stories can come from anywhere and right now, they are coming to us from Asia” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, echoing on the success brought by Lust Stories and Sacred Games.

“We are removing barriers of language and fixed schedule viewing to tell stories, and Asia is a unique piece of that storytelling ” added Sarandos at a Netflix slate event for the region as reported by Livemint.

As announced at an event by Netflix, the line of web-series consists of a sports drama, feminist drama, adaptations of books like Midnight’s Children and Bard of Blood, the latter starring Emraan Hashmi and co-produced by Shah Rukh Khan and Baahubali: Before the Beginning, a prequel of the world famous film franchise. Rajma Chawal, a feature film directed by Leena Yadav will also stream soon.
