Responding to local protests and feedback, the Southern Railways intends to launch train tickets that will include journey information printed in local languages such as Tamil and Malayalam very soon.
The demand for including local language scripts in train tickets had been recurring in Tamil Nadu with the railway authorities resisting the move.
A passengers amenities committee (PAC), which is incidentally being headed by H Raja, a vocal and influential Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party leader, seems to have convinced the railway boards to relent on the issue.
According to local media reports, the new format tickets might be printed from Tamil New Year on 14 April. Initially, the new format will be rolled out for unreserved classes in express trains and suburban trains.
The Southern Railways also intends to roll out these tickets in Malayalam for use in Kerala soon. Four groups had to be formed to ensure correct transliteration of the station names. The work is expected to be completed soon.
