Sri Lanka’s War Against LTTE: AIADMK Wants Congress, DMK Tried For Genocide of Eelam Tamils

The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has demanded that Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) be tried as war criminals for the genocide of innocent Sri Lankan Tamils during the last stage of the Sri Lankan Army’s war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

In the final phase of the war that ended in 2009, LTTE supreme Velupillai Prabhakaran was shot dead but along with him hundreds of innocent Lankan Tamils were alleged to have been killed or subject to human rights violations.

A meeting of AIADMK district secretaries at the party’s headquarters in Chennai on Wednesday (19 September) also decided to stage state-wide protests on 25 September against the DMK and Congress for their role in the genocide.

What has given the AIADMK an ammunition against both these parties that have been alleging corruption against the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu is an interview given by former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa to a television channel. Rajapaksa told the channel that the Sri Lankan army had got assistance from India then. At the time, the United Progressive Alliance led by Manmohan Singh was in power with the DMK being an active ally in the government.

English daily Deccan Chronicle quoted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami as saying that it was DMK and Congress deceit that hurt the Tamils badly. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam also questioned a fast observed by the late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi in 2009 on the issue. Karunanidhi withdrew his fast within a couple of hours after the Lankan government announced cessation of hostilities.
