Subramanian Swamy Reiterates Call For Shutting JNU For Two Years; Suggests Renaming It After Subhash Chandra Bose

Senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Dr Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday (26 November) called for closing down the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for a period of two years and renaming it after freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose, reports Asian News International (ANI).

Asserting that a large number of institutions across the nation are named after India's first prime minister Nehru, Dr Swamy made the case, "Subhash Chandra Bose is a nationalist and the name would have a positive impact on students. Why should everything be named after Nehru?"

A member of the Rajya Sabha, Dr Swamy also underscored that as an outcome of renaming the institution as Subhash Chandra Bose University and shutting it down for a span of two years, "We will have civilised students after that and not junglees like we have today."

The call for closing down JNU and renaming it comes amidst the violent strikes and protests that the students of JNU have launched over hike in fee structure. The protesters have gone on to vandalise several parts of the University, while also defacing a soon to be unveiled statue of Swami Vivekananda.
