Indian football team's Captain Sunil Chhetri has bettered Argentina's Lionel Messi to become the second-highest active international goal-scorer with 74 goals.
Chhetri struck two goals to help India defeat Bangladesh 2-0 in the ongoing FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China Qualifiers at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium at Al Sadd Club in Doha, as per a report in The Times of India.
Chhetri scored both his goals in the second half of the match as he cleared the ball into the goalpost in the 79 and 92 minutes.
He has now scored 74 goals, two more than Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo (103)tops the list of active footballers with the most international goals.
The India captain is also just one goal away from entering International football's all-time top-10 goal scorers. He is behind Hungary's Sandor Kocsis, Japan's Kunishige Kamamoto and Kuwait's Bashar Abdullah, tied with 75 goals.
India will play next against Afghanistan in the Qualifiers on 15 June. The Indian side is looking to qualify for AFC Asian Cup, being already ousted from the world cup qualifying race.
