The Supreme Court has taken suo moto cognisance of criminal contempt of court by advocate Prashant Bhushan and will hear the matter tomorrow (22 July).

Twitter India has also been named as a party in the contempt of court proceedings which will be heard by a three judge bench led by Justice Arun Mishra. The matter is said to have stemmed out of some tweets posted by Bhushan.

It should be noted that a criminal contempt case dating back to 2009 is pending against Bhushan. The last hearing in the matter was conducted in 2012.

Recently Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul had slammed senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan while hearing his plea seeking a directive for the government to allow migrant workers to return to their native place.

During the course of the hearing Justice Kaul said that Bhushan casts aspersions on the judiciary whenever he does not get a favourable relief and added that, “You don't have faith on us. How can we hear you. An order can always be criticised."
