Supreme Court Reaches Full Strength Of 31 Judges For First Time Since 2008 As Four New Judges Sworn In

The Supreme Court has sworn in four new judges today (24 May), namely Justices B R Gavai, Aniruddha Bose, A S Bopanna and Surya Kant, reaching its full sanctioned strength after a gap of 11 years, reports Live Law.

The parliament had increased the total number of judicial positions at the apex court from 26 to 31 back in 2008, but this is the first time since then that the increased sanctioned strength has been fully filled up.

The Supreme Court has been rapidly filling up vacant positions since Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi took over its mantle, with ten judges being appointed since October 2018.

After the collegium had sent the names of Justices Bopanna and Kant for elevation to the Supreme Court, the Centre had returned the said recommendation citing issues of seniority and regional representation. However, the collegium had stuck to its guns and reiterated its stance.
