Supreme Court Refuses To Hear Plea On Public Protest Against Jallikattu Ban

The Supreme Court today (19 January) refused to hear a plea related to the public protest against Jallikattu ban in Tamil Nadu, asking the petitioner to move to Madras High court. The court’s decision comes as Tamil Nadu Chief minister O Panneerselvam arrived in New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to urge an ordinance on Jallikattu.

Massive protests continued on Thursday in Tamil Nadu in support of Jallikattu, the ancient and popular bull-taming sport. At the Marina beach, protesters sat through Wednesday night and on Thursday morning, and helped in cleaning up the area, which is a litter free zone.

On Wednesday, thousands of young men and women demanded not only an end to the ban on Jallikattu but also a ban on People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which opposes the sport. With several colleges declaring holiday, the number of students to assemble at the Marina beach is expected to go up.
