Tamil Nadu, Telangana Next In Line To Get AIIMS: Cabinet Clears Rs 2,292 Crore Projects For Madurai And Bibinagar

The Union Cabinet on Monday (17 December) approved the development of two new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), one each in Tamil Nadu and Telangana, Economic Times has reported.

According to the report, Tamil Nadu AIIMS would come up at Madurai at a cost of Rs 1,264 crore while the one at Telangana will be built at Bibinagar and will cost Rs 1,028 crore.

The two new institutes will be set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

"Setting up of new AIIMS would not only transform health education and training but also address the shortfall of health care professionals in the region," and official statement said.

Each of the two new AIIMS will add 100 undergraduate MBBS seats and 60 BSc Nursing seats and will have 15-20 super specialty departments. Both the institutes will each have 750 hospital beds.

Besides, each of the new institutes will service around 1,500 outdoor patients on a daily basis.

The institute campus will have a hospital, teaching block for medical and nursing courses, residential complex and allied facilities and services.

The time frame for development of these new projects will be 45 months, including a pre-construction phase of 10 months, a construction phase of 32 months and commissioning period of three months.
