As per the budget papers that were presented in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, nearly Rs 544 crore may be allocated by the government for setting up of the fifth and sixth 1,000 MW nuclear power plant with Russian technology at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu. At present two 1,000 MW units have been set up at Kudankulam and work for building two more similar units have begun.
A total of six 1,000 MW units are planned at Kudankulam which will be owned by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). In the meantime NPCIL has been asked to make a detailed project report (DPR) for setting up of 10 units of 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors over the next 10-15 years.
