A National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court on Tuesday (30 October) charged Lt. Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and five others under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in the September 2008 Malegaon blast case, reports The Economic Times.

The accused have been charged of being part of a terrorist act and have also been accused of criminal conspiracy and murder under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The Supreme Court had in August granted bail to Purohit in the said case. Seven people were killed in a bomb blast on 29 September 2008 at Malegaon, a communally-sensitive textile town in Nashik district of north Maharashtra.

Maj (Retd) Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi, Sudhakar Chaturvedi and Sameer Kulkarni have also been named as accused.

In December 2017, a special NIA court had dropped Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) charges against Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, Purohit and nine others.
