Theresa May Calls For Snap General Elections In June

In a statement made outside her official residence at 10, Downing Street, British Prime Minister Theresa May announced snap general elections for the United Kingdom on 8 June 2018. May said that the UK needed certainty, stability and strong leadership in the aftermath of the Brexit vote.
She said that “The country is coming together, but Westminster is not”, adding that division in Westminster will risk the country’s ability to make a success of Brexit. She stated that the only way to ensure security was to hold the election.
The announcement received mixed responses from politicians across the United Kingdom. While Conservative politician Andrew Stephenson and Scottish Nation Party member Owen Thompson were positive, Jess Philips of the Labour Party was not.
