Amid the controversy over objectionable videos posted on TikTok, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Shama has called for a ban on the Chinese video-sharing platform, saying that the application was “pushing youngsters towards unproductive life”.

The NCW Chief in a tweet on Tuesday (19 May) said that she’s of the “strong” opinion that TikTok should be “banned totally” and will be writing to the Centre seeking a ban on the Chinese app.

“It not only has these objectionable videos but also pushing youngsters towards unproductive life where they are living only for few followers and even dying when no. decline,” Sharma said in a tweet.

The statement comes after BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga tagged the NCW chief in a tweet, where he shared a video posted by a Twitter user purportedly showing TikTok users glorifying rape.

Earlier, the NCW had asked TikTok to remove a video of Faizal Siddiqui, which allegedly promoted violence against women. After the NCW complaint, the video was removed from the platform.

The commission also wrote to Maharashtra’s director general of police to take action against Faizal for "promoting the grievous crime of acid attack on social media".
