Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has remarked that the accords signed by Rajiv Gandhi in Assam, Punjab and Mizoram when he was the Prime Minister (PM) were ‘absurd’, Economic Times has reported. He made the remark while criticising the National Register of Citizens (NRC) that was recently released in Assam.
The TMC led by Mamata Banerjee has been a severe critic of the Assam NRC. While terming the 33 year old Assam accord as ‘time barred’, S S Roy has also demanded a United Nations Commission of Human Rights (UNHRC) monitored NRC. Further, he added that the decision to implement provisions of Assam accord was part of an ‘evil design’ by the Modi government to segregate religious and linguistic minorities.
Earlier in the month, a TMC delegation to Silchar was detained at the airport by the state police. The seven member delegation of MPs was led by S S Roy and aimed to take stock of the situation after the release of NRC. The TMC MP Mahua Moitra, a member of the delegation was caught on camera assaulting a woman constable at the airport.
The TMC MP has also criticised the BJP for circulating a 2005 video where she is seen demanding a NRC in the Parliament. While calling the video clip as “tailored”, he added that Mamata Banerjee was the sole MP who had protested against the NRC.
Mamata Banerjee has been slapped with five cases by Assam Police for making provocative remarks on the NRC on separate occasions.
