C Vijayakumar, the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Coimbatore Range, died after shooting himself with his gunman's pistol this morning (7 July).
Vijayakumar had reportedly just returned to his office at Race Course after his morning walk.
The reason for the suicide is not known and police have said that they are investigating the case.
According to a report by DT Next, preliminary inquiries have found that he was taking medicines for depression.
The body was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner V Balakrishnan and West Zone Inspector General of Police R Sudhakar visited the hospital.
Vijayakumar took charge as Coimbatore Range DIG in January this year. Before this, he served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anna Nagar, Chennai.
Condoling the death of Vijayakumar, Chief Minister MK Stalin said that he was shocked and saddened by the incident.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai also expressed his condolences.
He said that the suicide of such a high-ranking officer must not be taken lightly and the case must be investigated properly. Further, he asked the government to throw light on the steps taken on the report of the Fourth Police Commission headed by Justice CT Selvam and its plans to fill the around 10000 vacancies in the department.
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
