In a big relief for motorists, Toll Plazas on National Highways across India may soon become history as National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is now planning to introduce GPS based tolling, Times of India has reported.

Toll Plazas are notorious for causing traffic jams on the highways which have not eased despite the introduction of Fastag. In some cases motorists and truckers stay stuck in traffic congestion for an hour thereby defeating the purpose of the highways which are designed for a fast and hassle-free driving experience.

Under the new system, the toll amount will be directly deducted from the bank account of motorists. Vehicles sold after 2019 have an inbuilt tracking system which can be used to implement the new toll collecting system. The mandatory vehicle tracking system is expected to be extended to all private vehicles.

Under the GPS based toll collection system the motorists will only be required to pay for the distance travelled unlike the present practice of charging a flat rate.
