In an electoral turnaround that is certain to obstruct US President Donald Trump ‘s legislative agenda and result in a wave of investigations into his alleged acts of wrongdoing, Democrats are all set to capture a majority in the House of Representatives for the first time in eight years, Fox News has projected.

However, the Republicans were able to stave off the challenge from Democrats and hold onto their narrow Senate majority. Republicans’ hold on the Senate will provide them levers to make ideologically aligned judicial appointments, including nominations to the Supreme Court.

Exploiting the anti-Trump undercurrent in suburban areas of the country, Democrats are set to capture at least 23 Republican-held seats required to claim the majority in the US Congress.

The surge of support among educated, white voters for Democrats was evident in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, where three-term Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock lost to her Democratic rival Jennifer Wexton.

In a suburban Denver Congress seat, Democrat Jason Crow defeated serving House member Mike Coffman of the Republican Party. Democrats also won key seats in House races in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida.

Republicans managed to hold on to a Senate majority with wins by Josh Hawley over Senator Claire McCaskill in Missouri, Kevin Cramer over Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota, and Mike Braun over Joe Donnelly in Indiana.

As per latest projections, Ted Cruz is likely to score a narrow win in a second term as Texas Senator, overcoming an inspired challenge from Democratic opponent Beto O’Rourke.
