United States (US) Senator Elizabeth Warren announced her bid to enter into the race for the 2020 presidential elections on Monday (31 December 2018), reports The New York Times. She is expected to face a very crowded and divided field within the Democratic nomination process.

Having a strong candidate is said to be crucial for the Democratic party in the next presidential elections as it seeks to dislodge the Republican incumbent US President Donald Trump.

The Democratic field is considered to be wide upon as consolidation of leadership within the party is at a low compared to decades of domination by the Clintons and Barack Obama.

The midterm election success of the Democrats-many of whose female, minority and liberal candidates won, will likely script the direction of the presidential primaries and caucuses which will begin next year, as the party would be inclined to select someone who’d reflect this new reality it finds itself in.

69-year-old Warren has had a long-running public war of words with Trump, with the latter mockingly referring to her as ‘Pocahontas’ because of her claims to Native American heritage, and the senator, in turn, calling the president ‘a thin-skinned racist bully’ and ‘wannabe tyrant’.

Warren’s repeated verbal bouts with Trump and her attitude towards Wall Street have won her a great degree of support from grassroots liberals. However, she will face tough competition from other better-known faces like former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders.
