Twenty-Two UNHCR Members Condemn China’s Crackdown On Uighur’s Muslims As Islamic World Maintains Total Silence

Condemning Beijing's oppression of the Uighur Muslim minority in the Xinjiang province, 22 countries have come together to urge China to refrain from its act, reports Business Insider.

Interestingly, none of these was a member of Organisation of Islamic Countries. The members of the United Nations Human Rights Council have written a letter, in which the signatories have called on China to, "refrain from the arbitrary detention and restrictions of freedom of movement of Uighur Muslims and other minority communities in Xinjiang."

Having quit the UNHRC last year citing lack of intent, the US not being a signatory was also palpable as is the case of the Islamic World. In fact, the Donald Trump administration has not done anything beyond rhetoric towards the plight of the Uighur Muslims despite the Republicans and Democrats unequivocally urging for a formal gesture.

Fearing drawing attention on their own dubious human-rights records and China's economic retaliation, the countries of the powerful Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have shied away from taking a collective call on Beijing's approach on its Muslim community.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, both of whom have close ties with China are turning a blind eye on the issue and the rest of the Islamic world to follow the suit. Turkey which had spoken about the issue also took a u-turn to change its tune.
