A Twitter handle claiming to be M Veerappa Moily, former union minister for environment and forests and former chief minister of Karnataka raised a lot of eyebrows when a tweet appeared yesterday night (15 March) accusing the state’s Public Works Department (PWD) minister of being part of a “nexus” with road contractors ahead of the assembly elections set to take place in the summer.

Incumbent PWD Minister H C Mahadevappa is considered a close friend of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The handle claiming to be Moily, however is an unverified handle. It also claimed that the party selected its candidates on the basis of how connected they were in the construction mafia.

The tweet tagged Congress President Rahul Gandhi, the party’s official handle, its state unit’s handle and also an account claiming to be his son Harsha.

In the run up to the elections, state capital Bengaluru has seen an flurry of announcement on road projects many of which have come under criticism by residents and city activists who have raised serious concerns on the ground of questionable utility or lack of planning. The much touted white topping of roads was abandoned within days of work having gone underway.

Another major project planned, the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) or Pod Taxi system for the city created controversy when it emerged that the sole bids for the maiden line were from a company associated with Bengaluru Development Minister K J George.
