The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday (30 January) announced adoption of "law amendments" to grant citizenships to foreign investors and professionals.

The changes in UAE's citizenship law will allow for the naturalisation of foreign investors, doctors, scientists, artists and talented people and their families, reports Gulf News.

UAE's Vice-President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the amendments to the gulf kingdom's citizenship law on Saturday.

"The new directives aim to attract talents that contribute to our development journey," Sheikh Mohammed said in a tweet.

The amendments in the UAE citizenship law will allow a person to retain their original nationality, which is significant change to the previous rule that prohibited dual citizenship.

However, the new rules do not allow people to apply for UAE's citizenship directly. Instead, skilled professionals would be nominated by government or royal court officials. This includes the Cabinet, the executive council of each of the seven emirates, the rulers' courts, or their crown princes, reports The National News.
