UN’s Food And Agriculture Organisation Warns Of Another Attacks Of Desert Locusts In July

United Nations (UN)' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that 16 Indian States could go on to witness another round of attack of the crop-munching desert locusts in the coming month of July, reports Hindustan Times.

As per FAO, with the onset of monsoon in Rajasthan's deserts, successive waves of swarms are expected to arrive into India from southern Iran and the 'Horn of Africa' peninsula. FAO underscored that as of now, India has only witnessed the early migration of spring-bred locust swarms from southwest Pakistan.

Noting that presently second-generation breeding is underway in northwest Kenya, FAO underscored that several swarms of immature locusts are set to unleash further devastation from the second week of June, until at least mid-July.

Locusts can fly up to 150km in a day and a one-square-kilometre swarm can eat as much food as 35,000 people.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that in India, several States, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have already been badly hit by the invasion of unbridled locust swarms which entered India from Pakistan in April.
