Uttar Pradesh’s Mau city on Monday (16 December) witnessed violent protests by locals protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which aims to fast-track citizenship for persecuted minorities of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
The protests in Mau city, which is around 110 km east of Varanasi, turned violent when the protesters reportedly set on fire around half a dozen vehicles near Mirza Hadi Chowk in Dakshin Tola police station area, the police said, reports Hindustan Times.
According to the report, a senior police officer said that a large number of locals protesting against the CAA also blocked the road. The police asked them to lift the road blockade following which they got enraged and damaged several vehicles. They also pelted stones on the police personnel.
They then barged into Dakshin Tola police station and broke tables, chairs and a few bikes parked in the police station.
Following this, the police had to lob teargas and lathi-charge on the protesters to drive them away. Police also had to resort to firing to bring situation under control.
